These exciting Mandarin Chinese classes for children will be delivered in one hour sessions and will be taught in 100% immersion Mandarin. Not only is this conducive to the whole learning environment, thus enabling a modern Chinese learning environment for our students, it will also reinforce our students’ listening and speaking skills in Mandarin Chinese.

Our Mandarin Chinese program for children who are native Mandarin learners will be intensive yet fun. The program content will focus on developing strong reading and writing skills in the Mandarin Chinese language and will focus on:

1. The teaching of reading and writing of Chinese characters through our innovatively designed program which is specifically for young heritage learners who are native Australian-Chinese Mandarin Chinese speakers. Children will be taught step by step, the Chinese radical characters through our innovatively created teaching methods which are researched on an ongoing basis by our highly trained Program Director and her team. Our aim is to be able to teach an average of 250-350 characters per year over a 1 hour session per week. For reference: children in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong are required to master 500 characters in their first year of primary school. It takes mastery of some 4000 characters to read a Mainland Chinese newspaper (Source: Chinese Language Education in Schools by Dr. Jane Orton, October 2008)

2. FUN Chinese rhythm and rhymes! Children of all ages learn effectively through lively rhythmic ballads. ‘Nursery rhymes play an important role in the cognitive and linguistic development of children (Syamalakumari, 2009). Teaching rhymes help children not only develop their language skills (Crystal, 1996), but also predict their literary skills in the future (Bryant and Bradley, 1985).’ Through the power of rhyme, we will engage our students creatively and reinforce the content which we are teaching.

3. The introduction and teaching of Mandarin Chinese grammar including:

  • Mandarin Chinese Sentence Structure
  • Mandarin Negatives
  • Mandarin Questions
  • Mandarin Adjectives
  • Mandarin Measure Words
  • Mandarin Past Tense

In line with our Mandarin Stars philosophy, these Mandarin Chinese classes for children who are native learners will also be developed and delivered in a fun and engaging manner- our goal is to inspire our students, develop their sense of pride in being able to speak more than one language and also motivate them to continue learning Mandarin.

In our commitment to creating and developing a first class Mandarin Chinese program for children here in Australia, we will be researching our program content and our teaching methods on an ongoing basis. Our program research takes place globally. So far, we have worked with contacts and resources in China, Hong Kong, Singapore, the UK and the US.

Furthermore, we are very committed to developing, training, coaching and mentoring all of our teachers in every way possible so that they can be as successful as possible in teaching your child Mandarin Chinese.

‘I have been very impressed with the staff and the amount of work that goes into preparing for each of the classes.  It’s quite obvious to me that a lot of thoughts have been put into preparing all the activities for the children.  There were always interesting and new materials for the activities as well as the repetition of regular songs and activities to make the children comfortable.  Best of all, my daughter loves coming to class and have taken a real liking to all her teachers.  She talks about them at home and she looks forward to coming to class.’

Violet (Mum to Jade and Kiera)

‘Attending Mandarin classes it not just for fun but also seeing Madeleine (who is very shy in the classroom) sing along to all the songs when she is at home or in the car. She was reading a book the other day and pointed out a dog and said ‘Gow’ in Mandarin, and I thought that was impressive given the fact we only attended a few classes. She has also started to say ‘yes’ and ‘no’ and count to ten in Mandarin. Thank you Dawna and Staff.

Lisa (Mum to Madeleine)

‘We have been to Mandarin Stars for a month now. Having been to other more conventional Chinese class, we feel that the main attraction of Mandarin stars is that it has made learning fun. It’s very much catered for kids in this age group.’

Connie (Mum to Hayley)

‘Thank you for providing such a fun environment for learning. I love Mandarin Stars and really enjoy bringing Emily along. I even think I like it more than her. I think you may need to run a parents class but slower for us oldies!!! We will definitely be back next term.’

Leanne (Mum to Emily)
