We are thrilled to announce that Leaf Yip will be stepping into her new role as Franchisee for Mandarin Stars – Perth North territory starting from Term 2, 2025!
Leaf has been a dedicated and passionate part of the Mandarin Stars family since 2017, playing a key role in shaping our Perth programs. As one of the pioneers of Mandarin Stars Perth Team, she has inspired countless students to fall in love with the Mandarin language through her fun, interactive, and confidence-building teaching approach.
With her deep roots in the Perth North community and a genuine passion for making Mandarin learning exciting, Leaf is ready to bring our immersion-based programs to even more families!

To help you get to know Leaf better, we sat down for a fun Q&A session where she shared her journey, inspirations, and vision for Mandarin Stars – Perth North.
- Can you tell us a little bit about your journey with Mandarin Stars?
“My Mandarin Stars journey began in 2017, during my second year of uni, when I stumbled upon an ad on the uni hub screaming for passionate Mandarin teachers. I thought, ‘Hey, that’s me!’ and Rachael must’ve agreed because she gave me the green light. Fast forward to today, and I’m still here, riding the Mandarin wave!
What keeps me going? That unbeatable tingle of pride when my little stars call me their favourite teacher or when they confidently bust out Mandarin at family dinners or even in public. One of my all-time favourite moments? A parent told me her son did a Mandarin presentation for his grandma, who hilariously admitted she couldn’t fully understand his pronunciation but was over the moon that he was chatting away in Mandarin at family gatherings. It was equal parts funny and heartwarming, and it reminded me why I love what I do—because I’m not just teaching Mandarin, I’m sparking joy, confidence, and a whole lot of family laughs!”
- What inspired you to take on the role of Franchisee for Mandarin Stars – Perth North?
“I’m a huge believer in the Mandarin Stars program and its magic! I’ve seen firsthand how it sparks joy and curiosity in little learners, and I want to light up even more kids with that same excitement. Plus, having lived in Perth North since I arrived in Perth, I know there’s a growing community here who’d love to learn Mandarin in a fun, engaging way. I’m stoked to bring Mandarin Stars to more families up North and share the love for Mandarin with even more people!”
- What do you enjoy most about teaching Mandarin to children?
“I absolutely live for those moments when kids realize, ‘Hey, I can actually speak Mandarin!’ Seeing their confidence grow, watching their eyes light up when they spot Chinese words outside of class, and hearing their excited ‘Laoshi, guess what I saw!’ stories—those are the little wins that make teaching so rewarding.”
- What do you think makes Mandarin Stars special?
“Mandarin Stars isn’t just about teaching a language—it’s about sparking curiosity, building confidence, and creating a genuine love for Mandarin and Chinese culture. The interactive and playful approach keeps kids excited to learn and seeing them light up when they recognize words or use Mandarin in real-life situations is incredibly rewarding.”
- What can parents and students expect from your leadership in Perth North?
“Under my leadership, parents and students can expect a warm, supportive, and fun learning environment where every child feels valued and excited to learn Mandarin. I plan to introduce more cultural events, like Chinese New Year celebrations and storytelling sessions, to bring the language to life. My goal is to grow the Mandarin Stars community in Perth North, creating a space where families from different backgrounds can connect, learn, and celebrate Mandarin together!”
- What do you love to do outside of teaching?
“Outside of teaching, I’m all about living the hakuna matata life—no worries, just good vibes! I’m a huge fan of ball games, especially basketball (hoop dreams, anyone?). When I’m not shooting hoops, you’ll probably find me eating my way through Perth’s food scene—because why not? I’m also a total cat person, and my ultimate life goal is to live like Karl Lagerfeld’s cat. Think luxury naps, gourmet meals, and being adored by everyone. Basically, I’m all about fun, food, and feline dreams!”
